The Chuuk Islands (former Truk Lagoon) are part of the Caroline Islands in the South Pacific.

High on the list of every wreck driver’s dream destinations is Chuuk lagoon in the Pacific. Chuuk is, according to many, the standard by which all wreck diving should be measured. This maritime graveyard is a legacy of Operation Hailstorm, a US aerial assault which was one of the most devastating in maritime warfare, 15 times more powerful than the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour.

Many wrecks are at depths that can exceed 600ft, so if you're into deep diving, this is your place. Many wrecks, such as the San Francisco, start at a depth of only 150ft and are therefore easily reached by sport divers. Visibility varies from 50-200ft. The water temperature is on average a comfortable 82°F.

The warm tropical water, prolific marine life and ocean currents have transformed the wrecks at Truk Lagoon into breathtakingly beautiful coral gardens and artificial reefs, home to hundreds of exotic marine animals and fish. Today, Truk lagoon remains a Mecca to sport divers, underwater photographers and marine scientists alike.

The variety of wrecks within the sport diving range is impressive: a submarine, Japanese Zeros, Betty bombers, destroyers, submarine tenders and supply ships. The wrecks are addictive; visiting once is never enough. Like good wine, the wrecks mature with age; guns now wear garlands of sponges, tunicates and hydroids, and explosions of soft corals.

Fumitzuki Destroyer
Depth 70-120ft. A 320ft destroyer that sits upright. Good marine growth, soft corals, black coral & anemones. This is a super popular dive site & one with a lot of history.

Shinkoku Maru
Depth 20-130ft. A 500ft tanker sitting upright. Some of the best marine life in the lagoon congregates here on this wreck. More than 100 anemones & clownfish, lionfish, soft corals, schools of jacks & a few sharks.

Yamagiri Maru
Depth 50-110ft. A 439ft freighter lying on its port side. Contains the largest artillery shells ever produced, made for the Japanese super-battleships Yamato & Musahi. Abundant soft corals & anemones.

Kansho Maru
Depth 25-130ft. A 375ft freighter sitting upright. Easy access to the engine room, radio room & galley. You will dig the "Clownfish Town" at 35ft.

Kiyoumi Maru
Depth 40-100ft. A 450ft freighter lying on its side. Extensive marine vegetation covers the ship.

I-169
Depth 100-140ft. Aft section of a 343ft submarine. Forward section & conning tower are destroyed.

Heyan Maru
Depth 35-115ft. A 510ft submarine tender lying on its port side. It is the largest ship in the lagoon. Contents include torpedoes, artillery shells & periscopes.

Betty Bomber
Depth 50-65ft. A Japanese long range bomber lying the sand surrounded by corals & tropical fish.

Fujikawa Maru
Depth 0-120ft. A 437ft freighter sitting upright. It is the most well-known wreck in the lagoon. A favorite for artifacts & marine life. The cargo includes Zero aircraft bodies & wing sections, machine guns, bullets, & artillery shells. Soft & hard corals abound here.

One of the most prominent scenes on the Fujikawa Maru are the plaque placed on the main deck on the 50th anniversary of Operation Hailstone in 1994.

Nippo Maru
Depth 50-150ft. A 353ft freighter sitting upright. There is little coral due to depth. Artifacts include artillery guns, a tank, land mines & 2 trucks. This ship has the best preserved wheel house in the lagoon.

Momokawa Maru
Depth 90-150ft. A 354ft freighter lying on its port side. Cargo includes truck frames & plane parts.

Hoki Maru
Depth 45-150ft. A 100ft freighter sitting upright. Great cargo in the stern hold includes trucks, bulldozers, steamrollers & a tractor.

Unkai Maru
Depth 55-125ft. A 330ft freighter sitting upright. A very photogenic wreck with lots of coral & sponges.

Gosei Maru
Depth 10-110ft. A 282ft freighter lying on its port side. The stern is only 10ft from the surface. Lots of hard & soft corals near the shallow propeller. Hold #2 is full of torpedoes.

Rio de Janeiro Maru
Depth 35-115ft. A 461ft freighter lying on its port side. This huge wreck's propellers are covered with soft corals. Look for lionfish & gray reef sharks.

Sankisan Maru
Depth 0-100ft. Approximately 200ft of the bow section the freighter is sitting upright. Lots of soft & hard corals with beautiful marine life & tropical fish.

Hanakawa Maru
Depth 10-100ft. A 367ft freighter lying on its port side. It is visited by few divers due to its location in the lagoon. Considered one of the most beautiful wrecks covered with sea fans, soft corals & anemones. A great dive for macro photographers.

Shark Reef
Depth 60ft. A small reef inside the lagoon surrounded by a sandy bottom. A half-dozen resident sharks make for an exciting dive.

Northeast Pass
Depth 20-100ft. A drift dive into the lagoon through a break in the fringing reef. Hard corals, sharks & many tropical fish.

Pizion Reef
A wall dive starting at 15ft. Shallow portions have beautiful hard corals & giant clams. The deeper portions of the wall are occasionally visited by sharks, rays, tuna & turtles

Air temperatures uniformly remain in the 80°F year-round. Although visibility is slightly reduced by run-off during the July through October monsoons, the wind is also milder during this season, producing flatter seas. Water temperatures remain in the mid-80°F year-round. Typhoons are most frequent between August and December but are rare in Truk.
